The sun-baked asphalt of our apartment complex gleamed in this early afternoon roasting and a halo of dust played in the air just above it’s cracked and grass-encroached surface. Man it felt like July and I was six or seven years old again. Everyone in our neighborhood would spend a day like today with their garage doors wide open and their radios echoing down our crooked little street. Parents would be cutting grass washing their cars setting up garden sprinklers anything to be outside in such glorious weather… and the kids ? They would claim the sidewalks the ditches streets and driveways as their own domain. Back then we were an army of short-shorts-wearing savages with striped socks and “Hulkamania” tank tops stalking the block for entertainment. Running jumping skating playing games laughing and skinning our knees. An afternoon would seem like a lifetime of adventure and accomplishment before the sky darkened and mom called us in for dinner. There were a million things my adolescent mind could do with a sunny afternoon and an empty driveway. Here’s just a tiny portion of the summer pavement pleasures that went on in my and everyone else’s neighborhood back in the day: I remember the days before Pogs or Magic: The Gathering cards or whatever these rip-chord spinning battle toy things are called. Back when kids collected glass beads with little bits of mysterious coloured something-or-other inside and gathered together to “knuckle-down” and bash ‘em together by shooting them off their thumbs. If you were a particularly cocky kid (guilty!) you’d play for “keepsies” by pooling you and your friend’s marbles together and drawing a circle. Everyone would take turns shooting and whatever marbles you knocked out you kept. A savage and ancient ritual of might makes right. While the boys were off playing war in the ditch or trying to procure another net for ball hockey the girls would break out the skipping ropes. Two people would swing the ropes in a simple pattern while others jumped in and out. It was fun fast-paced exausting and mercilessly punishing to the un-coordinated. The black canvas of asphalt beckons the budding artist’s colourful imagination. You can create the most amazing pictures with chalk and can even blend colours and create depth with the careful application of a slightly damp cloth. I might have grown into a productive street artist if I’d played with more chalk as a child. George Orwell once wrote that “Skreevers” (chalk artists) are higher and more respected than “Moochers” (bums). There was always one kid that spent his outside time hunkered down playing with bugs. He’d eschew all social contact to study those tiny lumps of dirt that protruded from the cracks in the sidewalk that contained thousands of ants. He’d poke them with sticks trap them in jars feed them sugar cubes and use them to scare away girls. Was it an early sign of unhealthy pre-occupations ? Maybe a cry for help ? I dunno… but just to be safe we hid dad’s magnifying glass. It’s time to blow bubbles !!! Now I’m not talking about the little bubbles that you dip in the little jar and blow or the one’s they have now that you shoot from a super-soaker. I mean HUGE bubbles ! Dip the length of sting into the soapy water and swing the stick. As the string is drawn through the air it should open and form looooooong bubbles. For more info go. Once the bubble making ends everyone is covered in a sticky soap-scum but never fear ! You can follow-up with out next activity to clean everyone off and still have fun; Water guns are for wimps !!! Full-scale water wars could errupt at any time on my block usually ignited by a car wash scenario gone wrong. Fill you balloons as fast as you can and keep your head down ! A group of well-trained balloonadiers could totally take one person armed with a water hose you just had to have a plan. Unless that one person was my mom for some reason she was the fiercest water warrior in the family and became Rambo with an adjustable nozzle and a length of hose at her disposal. Of course the true test of a warrior came down to mano-a-mano with just water balloons. The master can actually catch a thrown balloon in the air and huck it back at the attacker. Fire in the hole !!! This very Machiavellian game has deceptively simple rules. Draw a large square on the pavement and decide who will be “it” this person cannot leave the square. The remaining four take up positions at the corners of the square and have to swap corners by the “it” person’s count of five. The “it” person can tag the others when they leave a corner and can call others “it” if they fail to leave their corner in time. The secret to success wait for one of the other players to make the first move and the “It” person to go after them then dash for safety. Sure your best friend might be tagged out but hey sacrifices must be made… A great game for developing the minds of future big-business CEOs. Whether you owned a bike a trike a skateboard or a box-car you could never get any neighborhood cred unless you drove your baby over a home-made jump… Preferably in front of all your friends. Pieced together out of whatever was lying around at the time these usually wedge-shaped spring boards were as fun to build as they were dangerous to drive over. We hardly ever got any. I guess our imaginations filled in details like that. How Canadian can you get ? This was the primary method of staving off boredom on a clear hot summer day with little to no traffic on the roads. It was always a little bit contact-oriented (pushing shoving and tripping were inevitable) and someone almost always got a slapshot in the private parts but it was great fun and social event. You can play it with almost any number of people as long as it’s an even number. Gloves and jerseys are optional… Grit and determination are a must.

"Thursday/Friday- Akha Tribe" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 03:52:39

Well you know how we slept... We awoke to a huge traditional breakfast- yup consisting of sieve. Vegetables scrambled eggs and pork dope. Our entertain would of got up 1-2 hours before the meal to prepare it. We ate at 8:00 am and enjoyed our tea from our new Bamboo mugs. Then it was time to arise again we went up to the view point- sight we said UP. On the way up bring up and Jamie cut down a bamboo channelise with a machete and carried it up to the top so we could use it as our cooking implement. Another center forge to a picnic sight marked by a bamboo straw hut with a deck ( that we ate our lunch off of). There was pipe sticking out of the hill with a constant be adrift of wet flowing from it. Once there our guide started to prepare our meal with us he cut drink 4 banana leafs to use with the Bamboo. He made the bamboo into a rice cooker an egg cooker tea pot, serving dishes and tea cups! Multi uses out of one Tree!! He also cooked meat on a fasten that looked like intestine- when asked what we were eating all we could interact was that it "was pig insides" - One was liver but we could not evaluate out the other tube shaped meat- heart aorta,intestines- who knows! While we were waiting for everything to cook- 2 hours- we walked the hillside our guide found a glide skin that was at least 4 feet long- again Terry got over her snake phobia and touched it -He served our lunch from the bamboo cooking vessels to banana peruse plates- how tropical - change surface more so considering the heat - at least 36-38 degrees in the sun! We encouraged Jack to eat early so we could leave the alter a little early- so we started our journey down the hill- change surface that is difficult when the incline is so steep. Back at the village we gathered our belongings- but before we left Jamie purchased one of the two machete knives and cases our host had made and used for the last 10 years. Jamie paid 400 baht ( 12.00 Can) for both knife and holder he had no way to carry it so our entertain and his wife sat on the surprise and braided a new sing out of a wood like abandon for Jamie to wear it. He looks officially jungle create from raw material. Now it was measure to journey again this measure 5 km across 7 hills to the Akha tribe village. A more level walk but very change path along the sides of center hills. Along the way. Jak cut us some bamboo walking sticks which proved helpful. Once arriving in the new village the conclude was amazingly different. This time there were a few more modern looking homes under construction. The children here ran freely and approached us curious and excited especially when they saw the stickers Jamie was carrying and starting distributing. Pretty soon every local child heard we were in town and what we were giving. We were introduced to our host families next separated this measure into 2 groups. Our experiences therefore differed from host to host. We stayed in bamboo huts that were barren of anything likely just used for sleeping guests. The girls had wasp central it wasn't an hour before Terry got stung on the end of her nose! They were literally hanging off the lighten on the ceiling hovering everywhere crawling around us during supper sitting on the surprise. Norrie got caught squishing one under the mat. Meals were interesting. The wife served us rice scooped up with her transfer!! Appetizing. Especially since there aren't a lot of sinks or clean around..... Here again we had no hot water and had only sit toilets. We are getting good at that! Again no toilet cover and any of our own we used had to be hauled out of the village when we left!!We were again treated to their traditional fire dance. Dressed us in full apparel which consisted of a heavy and clarify headdress lots of jewellery and beads and black skirts and colorful embroidered jackets and leggings. Just what we were looking for at 36 degrees! While we were waiting (remember Thai time) for it to go away. Terry taught the kids ring-around -the rosy with the children. Lots of laughing over the falling drink move. Unlike the Lahus they sang a chant with no drums or instruments. You could feel the emotion of their celebration in their sincerity and seriousness. Obviously a very spiritual experience for them and us. From this bear on of town we spotted the fires in the hills glowing against the horizon. The air by now has become very smoky from cut burning. Something the foreign agencies are trying to disapprove and inform better practices. FRIDAYSleep here again was limited thanks to the pigs roosters and early rising villagers (5 am). Our entertain the town chief did his morning announcements over the loud speaker. We people watched until our truck came to pick us up to return us to Mirror Foundation. Suddenly Mirror feels like luxury desire coming domiciliate. We unpacked showered then joined into the English camp. This is the day we got to break out the hockey sticks!! I don't experience who was more excited the foreign volunteers or the kids. They caught on FAST and loved it. Even the camp manager ( a 30 ish yr old woman)couldn't elude joining in. They were thrilled when they open out they get to keep the sticks. Picture 20 populate playing hockey in 36 degrees. Hot and sweaty but fun!! I think that was a first for them. After lunch where we gorged on the fruit (getting tired of rice???) and had our daily treat from the ice beat truck we planned our lesson for Monday so we could relax on the pass. At 5 pm 14 of us piled into a half ton transport (only in Thailand) and went into Chiang Rai which is customary for Friday nights at reflect. We enjoyed a Thai grill/buffet. Very interesting process you decide your ingredients and barbecue them at your table ( in 36 degrees bequeath). It was fun and a nice change to choose our own tastes. Including ice cream!!! From here we were taken to the famous night bazaar. After shopping the crowded streets we enjoyed yet another massage. This measure of our feet. A simply decadent hour. Nothing quite desire it and only about 250 bhat. $7.50 cndn. We headed to stay at Ben Guest accommodate to our glorious air conditioned rooms. Had some beer from 7-11 on our deck and yacked til 1 am. These rooms almost entangle desire a REAL hotel after our recent lodgings. They actually provided toilet paper and the shower had a furnish separating it from the bathroom. AND hot wet. Points of arouse:- Akha tribe is mostly farmers and work on center hills to grow their produce. Tough people.-They have no written language. Yet economically they are stronger than most tribes around-Women and change surface babies wear headdresses-It costs students who wan to learn English in Chiang Rai one day/week $25 a month. This does incredible things for them in terms of increasing their opportunities in life.
